Third World Roads in
First Rate Area
19-Feb-06, Press Release.
The Brockenhurst Road is among the worst
maintained in the Royal Borough and Local MP Adam
Afriyie along with Local Conservative campaigners have
been urging the Lib-Dem run Council to take action on
this and other roads in the South Ascot area.
Out collecting signatures for a petition to press the
issue with Local Conservative Campaigner John Story, Adam
Afriyie said:
“I am not surprised that local residents are unhappy
because we appear to have third world roads in a first rate
area. Residents are put under pressure with high-density
housing developments but the Lib-Dem council appear
unwilling to allocate resources for repairs and
infrastructure on a fair basis across the borough.”
Local campaigner John Story said:
“I’m helping to campaign for better roads because this
area of the borough, and transport are getting a raw deal
from the Lib-Dems, it’s time they looked beyond Maidenhead.”
Recent government judgments have found the Royal Borough
to be weak on transport, one of only 6 weak authorities in
the country. The Department of transport scored the Lib Dem
run Council as “weak”. In a damning report issued by the
Government, it said:
“the delivery of your first local transport plan in
2004/05 has been classed as weak.”
Much of the problem was found to be underinvestment in
projects already promised.
The petition signed by around 100 residents will be
presented at full Council by Cllr Alison Knight Conservative
Cllr for Sunninghill & South Ascot.
