Politicians are our servants
27-Jul-04, Windsor Observer.
"What image is conjured when I use the
word “politician”?
For many, including myself, one thinks of arrogance,
bossy know-it-alls and people who think they know best how
to run our lives; when most of them have never had a proper
job or experience before entering politics.
Even when there is little choice for many, when you’re
old that you’re bad to drive a car but should instead endure
an irregular bus service or cycle around Windsor in the
rain, something’s wrong!
When one listens to the current Government in particular
you feel you’re treated as their servant.
We’re told to fill in forms (About 25 pages for someone
with Parkinson’s disease who can hardly write). We’re told
to be grateful when we receive tax credits (in fact we are
only getting part of our own money back). We’re told we’re
somehow evil if we object to our county to be flooded with
illegal immigrants and the pressures that creates.
Well I reject completely the notion that we serve our
Government – nationally or locally under the Liberals.
Our politician’s and our Government are our servants. The
Government exists to protect us from external threat so that
we can enjoy our lives as “we” choose.
A little humility is required from our political
servants; A recognition that they are elected to take care
of our interests, not inflict their own views of the world
upon us.
In my view, our politicians are our servants. Let’s not
forget." |
