We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country with an active and caring community and I am therefore delighted to hear of the ‘community clean –up’ that took place on Tuesday 20th July at Pinkneys Green.
It is good to hear that local residents worked alongside police officers, fire and rescue personnel, staff from the housing association and many more to tackle the litter and graffiti at the site.
Cameron’s Coalition Government has set out a bold plan to transform the vision of a ‘Big Society’ into reality and I think it contains a powerful message about the way in which individuals can come together to build stronger neighbourhoods.
We expect government to ensure our streets are safe and our families can access quality healthcare and education. But I guess the challenge of the Big Society is that it expects us to take on responsibilities as well as rights – asking not just what government can do for us, but what we can do for our country.
The clean-up is a great example of this, with a community coming together to improve the local environment for everyone. It’s these sorts of local activities that not only improve the area, but bring people closer together.
I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who was involved in making the day a success. When we are constantly exposed to negative stories about anti-social behaviour and crime, events like the ‘community clean-up’ reassure me that we live in a society where people are willing to work for a better Britain.
